Leslie Nielsen, acclaimed funnyman of such classics as “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun,” is coming to Woodridge. He’s serious, and don’t call him Shirley.
Nielsen, an Emmy Award-nominated comedian and actor, will appear at Hollywood Blvd. movie theater Sept. 27 for “An Evening With Leslie Nielsen,” which includes a special screening of two of his best-known films.
“The Naked Gun” will show at 7:30 p.m. and “Airplane!” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. An audience question and answer session with Nielsen will be held before each film. He’ll also sign autographs before the films.
Even though he’s 82 years old, he’s not slowing down at all. He’s in Chicago at a collector’s show Sept. 27 and 28 at the Chicago Marriott O’Hare.
He’ll next be seen on screen in the Christmas spoof “An American Carol,” written by David Zucker and starring Kelsey Grammar, James Woods and Trade Adkins. He’s also got “Slap Shot 3” in the bag, and there’s talk of him reprising his role as the President in “Scary Movie 5.”
Owner Ted Bulthaup attributes Nielsen’s ongoing popularity and career longevity to his comedic timing and his willingness to adapt and change with the times.
“I think it’s his sense of humor,” he said of Nielsen. “He’s gone from a leading man in the ‘50s and ‘60s to the comedy genre, slapstick humor. People remember those movies, even though they’re over 20 years old. People have fond memories of seeing those films for the first time.”
He’s expecting big crowds to see a man old enough to be a great-grandfather to some of the moviegoers.
He thinks more and more A-list stars are willing to come to Hollywood Blvd. because of the theater’s growing reputation in the Hollywood movie industry as a premier place for dinner and a movie.
Expanding
The success of Hollywood Blvd. – Bulthaup says the theater boasts the highest attendance per seat of any theater in the country – has allowed him to expand the theater, as well as open a new location in Naperville.
“As people experience what we have to offer, business continues to grow at an amazing pace,” said Bulthaup. “I am extremely proud that our theater has been embraced so enthusiastically by the community. Even in this economy, attendance continues to grow exponentially.”
Three new auditoriums will join Hollywood Blvd.’s six screens, each with its own theme paying homage to classic Hollywood cinema. People who come to the Evening With Leslie Nielsen will be among the first to view the changes at the theater.
The Moroccan Plaza will pay tribute to “Casablanca” with its domed starry sky, while L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wizard of Oz” will be honored with its own auditorium watched over by the Wicked Witch of the West. The final addition will honor Tinseltown itself, with murals of classic Hollywood movie palaces.
Additionally, Bulthaup has plans for a Hollywood memorabilia museum that will be open to the public. It will feature screen-worn costumes, cars, set pieces and props, and historic Hollywood lobby cards, classic film posters and more.
The Hollywood Palms will open in Naperville in early 2009. The new cinema will feature a Mayan jungle-themed lobby with seven themed auditoriums and the same to-your-seat full bar and menu service as the Woodridge location.
